How to Use Lighting to Improve your Home

Remember when we had rooms lit by a single central bulb and a dusty lampshade? Those days are thankfully long gone, replaced with all manner of options for illuminating our homes. But with so many choices available, it can be hard to know how to create the right ambience for each space.

With most of our rooms now having to serve multiple functions, lighting designs ought to be flexible as well as reliable and, of course, aesthetically pleasing. Many of us are also looking for sustainable options that reduce energy and bills, so finding eco-friendly solutions has become a priority.

Making the Right Mood

Lighting in a room is not only a matter of practicality. It can significantly affect how we feel, helping to motivate us on a morning or relax us during the evening. Lifestyle magazine Stylist have come up with some suggestions for using lighting to improve your home and your mood.

Scandinavian Hygge interior designs are all about creating calm and comfortable spaces, which can be achieved with the right lighting. Think small areas bathed in softer light for your living and bedrooms using adjustable wall mounted lamps or subtle strip lighting underneath furniture.

Kitchens on the other hand need to be well lit for food preparation with the option to reduce the brightness for a gentler glow when eating or entertaining. Spotlights fitted in units are perfect for this or try an attractive pendant lamp above the dining table for both usefulness and charm.

Illuminating Noon to Night

When we design a room at House of Harrogate, we always take into consideration how natural light will affect a space. Making the most of this valuable resource can help a room to feel bigger as well as brighter, which is why we offer features such as bi-folding doors from our partners Shire Doors.

In this traditional kitchen, we complemented the bi-folding doors and existing window with strip lights in the work surfaces, spotlights in the units, and eye-catching pendant lights to add variety and flexibility. The pale colours also help to reflect light further and increase the sense of space.

We can also source and install a range of contemporary aluminium windows and roof lights to help improve the quality of light in your home. Or why not opt for some exquisite bespoke plantation shutters from Shutter Up Your Place, which will add flexibility and sophistication to any room.
